School Governance

GOVERNANCE COUNCIL

As a LAUSD affiliated charter school, SOEC has significant autonomy over policies, programs, and procedures. The Governance Council, which manages these policies and procedures, is comprised of elected teachers, parents, and staff representatives.  The council participates in decisions regarding curriculum, hiring, budget, enrollment, and day-to-day and long-term school administration concerns.

The Governance Council is comprised of 14 representatives, divided between staff and parents. Elections for the two year terms are held in the fall of each year to fill vacant Governance Council positions.

Meetings

Governance Council meetings are held the fourth Thursday of the month, at 2:40 pm, in the Sydel Auditorium. Meetings are open to the public, and parents, guardians, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend.

If you want to place an item on the agenda and/or have a concern or idea you wish to make known to the Council, please contact council chair, Kanchan Mattoo at  soecgovernance@gmail.com.  Monthly meeting times and dates are posted on the school calendar and are announced in the SOPA email blast. Meeting notices and agendas are posted on the Governance bulletin board in the hallway outside the main office.

Committees

The Council has established certain advisory committees in order to allow broader participation and to help the Council operate more efficiently as it works towards achieving the goals outlined in our charter. These committees meet separately from the Governance Council, but report their progress at the regular monthly Council meetings.  Committee meetings will be posted on the SOEC website and on the bulletin board at the SOEC office. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

Our standing committees include:

  • Community
  • Communications
  • Curriculum
  • School Safety
  • School-wide Positive Behavior
  • Student Success Team (SST)
  • Technology
  • Ad hoc committees are established when a specific issue requires a dedicated team to conduct research before a governance decision is made.

GOVERNANCE COUNCIL (GC) ROOM REPRESENTATIVES

The Governance Council manages policies, procedures, and programs at SOEC and is comprised of elected teachers, parents, and staff representatives. In an effort to better connect parents and guardians, GC members will wear blue “Governance Council” t-shirts at all school wide functions and will answer your questions, solicit your feedback, and encourage you to get involved at SOEC.

In addition, each classroom at SOEC has been assigned a Governance Council parent representative to help parents with any questions that may arise. Please see your assigned representative and their contact email address below.

**Room representatives have not been reassigned for the 2018-2019 school year yet.
