The SOPA Kids Center provides on-site childcare for students of Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter. In addition to operating an after school program (September-June), we operate a full day camp schedule for winter, spring, and summer breaks. Our licensed daycare program is owned by the Sherman Oaks Parents Association.
Philosophy
We strive to create an environment that respects the child and encourages the child to participate. Every child is valuable and entitled to be nurtured, to be encouraged, to be imaginative and to explore the world around them in a positive, playful, and safe environment.
The SOPA Kids Center is conducted and planned by qualified staff, educated to meet the needs of children from different age groups. The counselors are skilled in positive, proactive discipline techniques. The entire staff is trained to be responsive, supportive, and offer guidance to the children in compliance with Community Care Licensing, Title 22 standards. We maintain a ratio of 1 adult to every 14 children.
Children learn best when given choices to pursue areas of personal interest. We stress positive, fun education enrichment to expand and develop every child’s potential.
The Kids Center program includes supervised sport and outside game activities, table manipulatives, a quiet homework time, and a healthy snack. Kids Center utilizes classrooms, the school library, cafeteria and the main play yard for the program. There will be something exciting for every child, everyday! Most importantly we want to keep it fun!
New this YEAR…We are putting the SUPER back into our afterschool school program curriculum…
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays our in-demand professional enrichment staff will work with all Kids Center Kids doing what they do best!
Mondays - IT'S TIME TO GET UP AND MOVE - Ms. Monica Fleming, along with the Kids Center staff, will be putting the physical back into every Monday! Hip Hop routines, Music and Movement, even calming breathing to help ease down the day.
Wednesdays - IT'S TIME TO GET ICKY, STICKY AND A LITTLE DIRTY - Ms. Deanna Weigold will help your child learn about how things work when household chemicals mix together to form something new, how to save our earth thru recycling and group projects but most of all its about getting icky and sticky and having fun. Wednesdays will definitely be a bath day!
Fridays - IT'S TIME TO GET THAT FINE MOTOR AND CREATIVITY FLOWING - Mr. Gio Hidalgo will be using his expertise to help your child create fun fine motor art projects like Perler Beads, Origami Art and so much more! Fridays will be all about those Artsy Projects.
HOURS OF OPERATION
Before School Program
The SOPA Kids Center is the only program at SOEC offering before school care with drop off starting at 7:00am, 5 days a week.
After School Program
This program provides supervised child care from school dismissal of school to 6:00pm for all students. Children will have a choice of various activities with qualified counselors.
The SOPA Kids Center is open from dismissal to 6:00pm, including Tuesday shortened-days and minimum days. There is a late fee of $1 a minute after 6pm.
During the normal school year, we offer after school care (UTK/K-5th grade). Winter, Spring, and Summer camps are full day 7:00am-6:00pm.
Homework
Students will spend an hour each day (except on Fridays) in a classroom environment that is supervised by Kids Center counselors. SOPA Kids Center staff encourages all students to work on all pages of their daily homework; however, individual tutoring is not available within the SOPA Kids Center Program.
Winter, Spring and Summer Full Day Camp Programs
The SOPA Kids Center offers full day camp during the winter, spring, and summer vacation. Flyers and applications for Winter, Spring and Summer camp will be posted here for all families at Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter when they become available.
