hello everybody good morning mister long day long if you don't know who I am I am teaching me education at Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter than strings or a focus instrument General music is an approach to music that hopefully encourages your child to continue their own musical understanding and career I need some music is an approach to music that brings every different aspect of Music in shorts if it's to your child my approach to music can be broken down into four different categories and I'm just going to explain it as best as I possibly can and give you a snapshot of what we do inside the classroom at Sherman Oaks to create Young musician all the way from kinder up until 5th grade we all work on Arrow training and that's listening skills oral training can be as simple as is it loud or soft or was it major or minor are the notes happy together or angry together are they consonant order Step 2 after all training we work on physical training that means can I somehow do the music can I play with other students other people and that looks like that looks like percussion instruments that looks like a simple rhythmic instruments or even melodic instruments like eventually the recorder the ukulele things that are a little more complicated but in the youngest just that starts with sticks rhythm sticks keeping steady beat making sure we're playing together understanding when we pick up and put down our instruments and those skills Advance all the way into High School orchestra and band understanding when we stand when we sit when we raise when we put our instruments down when we pause for those skills skills those skills build forever over time we have are all we have physical then we have visual this one we start getting into much more in-depth in the older grades but of course we start as early as kindergarten witnessing and seeing the different pieces that create musical information what that means is notes words that you see inside of music music on the page treble clef bass clef all of the different components that your child will encounter at an older age at these young ages from kindergarten preschool all the way to 5th grade the major goal is to introduce as much as we can so that when your child moves on and has the opportunity to choose music in their older grades in life they are equipped with information that will guide them towards success music is difficult playing instruments as difficult it takes a lot of attention a lot of patients a lot of diligence and a lot of discipline all of this is rooted in plating in playing in games what's like a lot of education at early ages it's rooted in play so here's an example of something that will do we'll play a game called Doritos salami this is to practice recognizing patterns in music housing patterns so fresh and that's the structures of the major scale but they're two patterns they must not sing back what you do RAID 0 sounds like sounds like after icing that invaded appointment and will do the for fun whenever we have the chance of the way to train our ears practice those skills focusing on picking out patterns and recognizing when they are the same when they're different and but they're the very last one the thing that we typically get to further down the line is written after we learned all these skills after we can recognize an aural skills when things are happy sad fast slow Sharp flat at cetera and her ears are trained and then we can sing things backed up things back play together and then we understand all of the components the grammatical pieces that go into making music then we go into written and written skills can look anything like writing rhythms after you hear them to composing pieces of music all of these things just depend upon who is in front of us how far we've gotten how much were able to do there are standards that the state requires that we all go well learning specific note specific things but I really like to frame my teachings off of these four categories and will approach each one as often as possible quick summary your child is play music through playing and they're doing it through the lens of these four categories are 0 listening skills physical performance singing clapping instruments visual written music proficiency learning how to understand written music and written writing back what they hear or learning how to write down what they hear hey I think you so much for your time have a wonderful wonderful day I look forward to seeing your student and I look forward to seeing you at our winter sing in January 20th
